Baton Rouge Area High School Students to Host Dance Marathon Events

Local high school students at McKinley High School and Baton Rouge Youth Coalition have partnered with Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital to raise funds and awareness through Dance Marathon at LSU this year.  LSU students have mentored the high school students throughout the past year to help them plan and prepare for their own dance marathon events coming up.

Last year, Dance Marathon at LSU partnered with McKinley High School to form a high school dance marathon program.  Students at McKinley High planned a 6 hour event including food, entertainment, dancing, and of course, Miracle Family stories while also learning valuable leadership skills throughout the year.  McKinley students last year, raised over $1600 for the kids! This year, McKinley will be hosting their second annual event at Buchanan Elementary School on Saturday, March 10th from 10 am to 4 pm.

Last year, leaders from McKinley High School and Dance Marathon at LSU showed off their final fundraising total for McKinley High School’s first Dance Marathon.

Baton Rouge Youth Coalition (BRYC) has also partnered together with Dance Marathon at LSU this year to form a high school dance marathon program.  BRYC is a preparatory program for high school students with a mission to “prepare high-achieving, under-resourced high school students to enter, excel in, and graduate from college so they can become full participants in society.”  The Dance Marathon at LSU students have helped to achieve that mission as they have given the BRYC fellows a glimpse of what life at LSU is like and how they can use their skills and talents to help the local community.

BRYC is hosting a Car Smash Fundraiser at 460 N. 11th Street near downtown Baton Rouge on Tuesday, February 27th at 7:15 pm.  Jambalaya will be for sale, and participants can purchase opportunities to take a swing at an old car.  BRYC’s first annual Dance Marathon event will be held at LSU in Allen Hall on Friday, March 2nd from 7:30 pm to 11:30 pm.

We are so proud of these high school students and their willingness to raise funds and awareness for patients at Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital! Dance Marathon at LSU is a student-run philanthropic organization on LSU’s campus that raises funds and awareness for Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital.  Over the past four years, Dance Marathon at LSU has raised over $770,000 for the patients at Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital.  Dance Marathon at LSU students have engaged the entire Baton Rouge community including LSU faculty, local business owners, former patient families and high school students.

The new Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital is set to open Fall of 2019.
